This 1996 article by Oregonian staff member Tom Bates discusses Doctor Hart's transition in regards to a debate about what to call him. Earlier in the year a group had protested the use of "Lucille Hart Dinner" for a annual fundraiser for pro-gay political candidates with a group called "Right to Privacy".
This group had been using the name Lucille Hart to raise funds for several years, but some had issue with this. His name was Alan Hart, and that is the name that should be used. The group also had issue with calling Dr. Hart a lesbian. He was a man, not a lesbian!
Dr. Hart also asked, in his will that "no memorial be erected or created or contributions made in my name to any charitable, educational, medicinal or religious institution."
The organization did change the name of the dinner, but were worried about the loss of brand recognition.
